Synopsis
This whimsical adventure inspired by Chinese mythology takes place in the fantasy land of Saiunkoku and focuses on the sweet but resilient young Shurei, who is articulate and beautiful but is an aristocrat only in name. Her family's lineage is pristine and high-class, but her father has no money, and works as a librarian in the palace of the Emperor. One day he is visited by a royal advisor, who offers the poverty stricken father and daughter a chance to improve their circumstances, by Shurei becoming a royal consort to the Emperor, in an effort to encourage the lazy king to take more action. Shurei accepts, only to find that the Emperor is no shiftless lay about but rather, a shy young man who finds in Shurei the companionship he needs. Could these two souls have found the connection they each need to fulfill their destinies, or will the dark, looming political forces in the background succeed in destroying a nation's chance at prosperity? ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
