Synopsis
From Microcinema:
Scissere
A first-person foray into the disorienting realm between reason and sensation, Peter Mettlers SCISSERE is an incorrigibly inventive first feature film. It deploys a seemingly inexhaustible repertoire of optical effects, in rendering the experiences of a mental patient wandering outside institutional confines for the first time in many years. Wide-eyed and frightened, the central figure (named Bruno Scissere), imagines himself inside the sensibilities of three people he randomly spots at a bus station a young mother, a heroin addict and an entymologist. Elusive, allusive and aesthetically rich, it summons images from sources as diverse as Andrei Tarkovsky and Michael Snow. SCISSERE is a film which deliberately eludes verbal categorization or description and with good reason: the only logic heeded by a film about the surrender to pure intuition is the logic of sensation. In this case, reasons sleep has not bred monsters but inexpressible beauty.

Eastern Avenue
"In the Spring of 1983 I took a trip into my intuition through Switzerland, Berlin and Portugal. The following images are, for the most part impulsive intuitive reactions to the people and places I saw. They are cut together in a chronological order with the same impulsive approach, as is also the sound."

With these words Peter Mettler introduces Eastern Avenue. From the material he shot during a three month journey, he edited a lyrical film which is no ordinary travelogue or diary. Without occupying himself in advance with anticipated images, he attempted as often as spontaneously as possible to respond and react to his surroundings, improvising with the camera as one would on a musical instrument. These visual notes allow insights into perceptions, feelings and emotional states in various situations.

Balifilm
Mettler brings us into the world of the mystical and the unconscious through his exploration of this extraordinary culture. balifilm was originally commissioned as a stage performance, created from diary images and sounds collected in 1990 and 1992 by Peter Mettler on the island of Bali. The soundtrack is a live recording of eight Gamelan musicians playing the bronze and wooden instruments of Indonesia during the projection of the film. balifilm is a personal, lyrical observation and expression of the creative pulse of an extraordinary culture.
