Synopses
Killer of Sheep (Special Edition) (Disc 1 of 2) (1977)
The first feature film from acclaimed independent African American filmmaker Charles Burnett, this intensely emotional drama concerns a man who makes his living at a slaughterhouse as he struggles for economic and emotional survival and tries to patch up his often strained relationship with his family. Shot on weekends over a period of several years and first shown publicly in 1977, Killer of Sheep slowly but surely began to develop a potent reputation among film enthusiasts; in 1981, it won honors at the Berlin International Film Festival and an enthusiastic reception at the Sundance Film Festival. It was added to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 1990. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Killer of Sheep (Special Edition) (Disc 2 of 2) (1977)
The 2-disc special edition also includes an additional full-length feature (original release & director's cut), MY BROTHER'S WEDDING: When MY BROTHER'S WEDDING was rushed to a festival screening before the director could make his final cut, it received mixed reviews and was never released - denying audiences the chance to discover Burnett's remarkable second feature. The film critic Armond White called this 'a catastrophic blow to the development of American popular culture.' Revisited decades later, following restoration by the Pacific Film Archive and a complete re-edit by Burnett, MY BROTHER'S WEDDING proves to be funny, heartbreaking and timeless. Pierce Mundy works at his parents' South Central dry cleaners with no prospects for the future - his childhood buddies are all in prison or dead. With his best friend just getting out of jail and his brother busy planning a wedding to a snooty upper-middle-class black woman, Pierce navigates his conflicting obligations while trying to figure out what he really wants.

This film and director deserve to be at the top of anybody's list of top American films or directors. I had never heard of this guy, but I was blown away by this film. The photography (black and white) is beautiful and astounding. Minute details pack an emotional whollop. The acting is so natural and believable, major and minor characters and all these beautiful children. Okay, so there's no plot. The film just follows the lives of the residents of a semi-industrial area of South L.A. but the portrayal of protagonists love, hope, disappointment, and persevereance is subtle and moving. There's a great wide- ranging sound track. See this film.
