Synopsis
Pretentious New York underground filmmaker Nick Zedd apparently tried to package this 16mm horror parody as an instant cult classic for the midnight-movie circuit, but like all of Zedd's films only his die-hard followers will be impressed; others need not apply. The central theme (one can't really call it a plot) involves the mad Dr. Frankenberry (Robert Andrews) and his attempts to reanimate the dead. Along for the ride is aptly-named Richard Hell as a punk-rock cowboy and the quaintly-monikered Donna Death as the vampiress "Scumbelina," with narration provided by deadpan TV horror host John Zacherle. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

While I appreciate Nick Zedd's underground filmmaking ethos... by arotolante August 18, 2003 - 2:35 PM PDT

I fear that I can only give GEEK MAGGOT BINGO a score of 5/10. Why? Amateurish in the extreme, with cheesy dime-store effects, cardboard sets that would embarass Ed Wood, and performances that even Andy Milligan wouldn't commit to film, this film is nearly impossible to watch...while sober, anyway. I think I would have enjoyed it far more had I shared the experience with some rowdy friends over many, many drinks late on a Saturday night. I will admit that "horror host" Zacherle is amusing to watch, Richard Hell is just cute as a button, and Dr. Frankenberry's Formaldehyde Man is a rare creature of stunning no-budget beauty. This DVD also contains three 2001 Nick Zedd short-subject videos (ELF PANTIES, LORD OF THE COCKRINGS, and THUS SPAKE ZARATHUSTRA), a stills gallery, and a vintage video interview with those responsible for creating GEEK MAGGOT BINGO. Don't get me wrong...it's worth a look for those of you into underground, no-budget, cult films. It's just that I'd rather watch John Waters' DESPERATE LIVING if I want underground, no-budget, cult filmmaking thrills.
