| Saw the movie. Watched the extras. Watched the movie again the next day. It's not only that good, it's that intricate. Rewarding! |

Is it heresy to place Satoshi Kon (the director of PAPRIKA, "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers") above even Hayao Miyazaki (of "Spirited Away")? Tough: I do. His latest is buoyant, full of surprise and oddity, often so much fun as to leave you giddy with pleasure, before ending in yet another perfect moment--crisp, understated--of sudden understanding, humor and deep feeling. How much better can things get?!
Animation is not my favorite medium, but, boy, does this director/co-writer know how to make the most of it. He takes dreams and movies (the perfect combo, right?) and conflates them in the most unusual, wonderful ways. He's even sensual and sexy at all the right times. If you're already an animation fan, I don't see how you can miss this one. If you're not, "Paprika" just might make a believer of you. |
