Long thought dead, the victim of a horrible accident, Dr. Anton Phibes (Vincent Price) still lives, surrounded by art-deco bric-a-brac and attended by mute beauty Vulnavia (Virginia North). Outwardly normal in appearance, Phibes actually wears a rubber mask, covering his hideously deformed countenance; giving away the artifice is the fact that, when he dines, he takes his food through his neck rather than his mouth. Able to speak only when plugging a wire into his damaged vocal chords, Phibes elucidates his plan to murder the medical team whom he holds responsible for the death of his wife. Each of the killings is patterned after the ten deadly plagues. Phibes saves his worst for last: trapping chief surgeon Dr. Vesalius in his lair, Phibes forces the hapless medico into a race against time to save the life of his own son. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

| I am so pleased to have read Jonathan Marlow's assessment of THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES on Greencine's GURU review site. When I saw this film as a young man, I was disappointed--hoping for more thrills, chills and blood, I suppose. Seeing it again 35 years later, I think Marlow's right: It IS some kind of masterpiece. As quiet and graceful a chiller as you could want, with set design, photography and costumes to die for, each of its murder set pieces tops the next. I should think that, when they saw the first screening, the film's producers must have been agog and a bit bemused (if not scared shitless about recouping their investment). No worries: Critics of the day approved of the film, and audiences turned out for it--not in droves but in numbers enough to insure a sequel that I recall preferring over the original. Now, I shall have to return to that sequel, as well, to learn if the mature me finds it perhaps less impressive today. In any case, the original Dr. Phibes is very much one-of-a-kind, and one that any true horror connoisseur cannot miss. (The DVD transfer is excellent, too.) |
| Only perhaps Cheney is more diabolical...

...I don't _think_ Dick has ever dispensed with a rival in as devious and theatrical a manner as Phibes does here. All I can say is I hope he (Cheney) doesn't read recommendations on this site (YIKES!) |
