The Real "American Gangster"

Though not as captivating, wide-ranging and thought-provoking as his earlier documentary, "Protocols of Zion," Marc Levin's new film MR. UNTOUCHABLE is definitely worth a look--particularly as its "anti-hero" and story are also those of the fictionalized version shown in Ridley Scott's current "American Gangster." The film concentrates on the Denzel Washington character rather than on the one protrayed by Russell Crowe, yet the story, sans one major character, still fascinates, detailing how this sleazy but smart fellow grew in reputation and stature until he got his own cover of The New York Times Sunday Magazine. Which led to his downfall and... more. This is not a tale to make one proud either of America or of Black culture in the 1960s and thereafter. But there it is. Watch it and weep, laugh and grow angry.
