| I cannot say that this documentary was an eye-opener. Democracy south of the border is rarely of the showcase variety. Still, the fact that it was made at all, amid a culture of corruption in Brazil, is to the credit of the producer/director Jason Kohn. Too bad that it cannot be shown where it would have the most impact, in Brazil itself. I do not mean to be chauvinistic, but this documentary pales in comparison with some of the work done, for example, by PBS in their Frontline series. Its lesson, nevertheless, is noteworthy, and one too often dismissed in our culture of individualism and affluence: namely, that disparity of wealth breeds corruption and crime. |
