Synopsis
The moodily evocative docudrama T-Men stars Dennis O'Keefe as Dennis O'Brien, a treasury agent determined to bring a counterfeiting ring to justice. O'Brien and his partner Tony Genaro (Alfred Ryder) go undercover to gain the confidence of the ruthless Detroit mob responsible for the phony money. The plot, compelling though it is, takes second place to the film's stylish set pieces, superbly directed by Anthony Mann and brilliantly photographed by John Alton. Among the film's most famous moments is the scene in which two-bit hood Wallace Ford is bumped off in a steam bath by sadistic hood Charles McGraw, not to mention the harrowing vignette wherein O'Keefe, posing as a crook, must stand by silently as his partner Ryder is murdered. One of the finest examples of the film noir form, T-Men proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that a film didn't need to have a lush budget, brilliant Technicolor and Clark Gable to score a hit with postwar moviegoers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Anthony Mann is unfairly underrated and ignored as a director. If you need proof, check this one out, and many others of his from different genres. There's never been a more noir movie than this one, comprised mainly of gangsters roaming the streets of a dingy city by night. Dennis O'Keefe is perfect for the role of good guy impersonating a gangster; his face and reactions to threats on his life are very convincing. As with all Mann movies, the story evolves carefully, methodically, with amazing attention to detail. It's gripping and hair-raising, full of the usual innuendo and intrigue.

The raw, savage, sceen-searing story of the treasury's tough guys! by eifert July 29, 2004 - 9:31 AM PDT

B-movie film noir classic T-Men, first of all, is directed by noir and western specialist Anthony Mann. It's shot by the brilliant cinematographer John Alton. That's enough to recommend the movie to noir films. The movie was made on a low budget but it looks great. The story isn't bad either with star Dennis O'Keefe playing a James Cagney-type roll. The story picks up steam (and not just in the bath houses) as it goes along and has a real gangbuster ending. Classic film noir shadows and crazy camera angles are used to great effect.

The only thing that dates the movie is the booming voice overs and open talking about the Treasury department.

Also, some of the lines are unintentionally funny:

"Ever spend a day in a Turkish bathhouse looking for a man? Don't."
