Poet Alan Ginsberg (1926-1998) was at the vanguard of so many cultural movements that it is hard to sort them all out. He was a key figure among the Beat poets of the fifties, and included among his cronies Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassidy and Alan Corso. His groundbreaking performance poems, "Howl" and "Kaddish" still resonate with new readers to this day. His was an early voice raised in protest against the Vietnam war, and he was well acquainted with all the most controversial figures in the cultural and political movements of the '60s, ranging from Joan Baez to Timothy Leary. Later in life, he continued to be controversial for his spiritual concerns (usually Buddhist in some fashion) and his spirited celebration of his homosexual lifestyle in his later books and poetry. This 1992 documentary takes a fairly conventional and chronological look at the man and his life, neatly skirting most of the really interesting stuff, while concentrating on his public life. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
