Synopsis
Writer-director Del Shores serves up a heaping helping of Southern-fried comic melodrama in this adaptation of his own play about infidelity, country & western music, and Airstream trailers. When their sister dies, Latrelle (Bonnie Bedelia), LaVonda (Ann Walker), and Sissy (Beth Grant) plan her funeral -- an unenviable task, considering that they must carefully hide the deceased's affair with amputee G.W. (Beau Bridges) from his wife, the vindictive Noleta (Delta Burke). Meanwhile, the trio has to come to terms with two cases of sexual orientation: Latrelle's openly gay soap-opera star son Ty (Kirk Geiger), whose sexuality she continues to deny; and their only brother, Boy (Leslie Jordan), who's serving a sentence in a mental ward for his adamant belief that he is actually country & western legend Tammy Wynette. Playing an aspiring singer-songwriter, Olivia Newton-John turns up to provide the film with the occasional musical interlude. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

It sho nuff is easy to make fun of dat trailer trash, yesiree! On the other hand, when it's done with as much over-the-top zest, spirit and the occasional hilarious turn of phrase as Del Shore provides with this (clumsily filmed, but who give a rat's ass?) version of his play, you may, as we did, rejoice in the ride. In addition to the ribald humor, occasional nudity and foolish farce, there is sweetness of spirit and love of family that balances the nasty fun without pulling the rug from under it.

You will expect professional turns from actors such as Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges and Delta Burke. For me it was more the unknown quantities like Beth Grant, Ann Walker and Rosemary Alexander who actually provided the most "caint take your eyes off 'em" fun. And--golly gumdrops--Olivia Newton-John mixin' with this here crowd? Well, relax, listen, laugh and learn. You could do a WHOLE lot worse.

I first saw this movie in the theater, and was amused -- would have rated it 6 or 7. I've since rented it a couple times, and have now probably seen the whole movie 3 or 4 times and some scenes twice that. Some of the acting and editing is so precise and subtle that the characterizations move way beyond parody, and yet the dialogue can reach fall-off-the-couch funny pitches at points -- especially if you're gay, or a therapist, or in therapy, or a woman, or a peculiar attender of funerals, and maybe if you're Texan. I'd put this with some of my favorite local color, character and twist movies, like Fargo or Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Get everyone in the office to see it, as I have, and you'll develop a whole new language for conducting meetings and discussing challenging situations. Though there has been some variation in enthusiasm, no one yet has not liked it. Fairly sexual content, pretty subversive, adult film.
