Synopsis
Playing in a manner that can be conservatively described as larger than life, Kurt Russell plays a macho truck driver who agrees to go to the San Francisco airport and pick up his friend's (Dennis Dun) fiancee (Suzee Pai, freshly arrived from China. Suddenly, a gang of Chinatown toughs kidnap the girl right before Russell's eyes. After a wild chase sequence, Russell discovers that the girl has been abducted by a genuine, bonafide sorceror (James Hong), the ghost of a 3000 year old warlord. And that's just for starters. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Lighthearted romp... an even goofier "Escape from New York" with the same Carpenter and Russell team by MarkerB September 20, 2006 - 12:26 PM PDT

I saw this when it came out and I was 21, and so I'm biased by a certain nostalgic cloud. I might be rating this movie more high than I otherwise would.

John Carpenter tried a different approach to the venerable action/adventure movie: Put an ignorant, loud, non-worldly anti-hero into a fantastical situation which he couldn't possibly comprehend... and he barely manages to rise to. It's worth checking out for the outcome of this noble experiment. The action scenes and special effects are pretty tame by today's standards, but it's still a good ride and fairly amusing. There's is none of the usual John Carpenter horror here, and you can even hear the writer/director singing in a bass voice in the closing credits. The commentary with Carpenter and Kurt Russell is interesting, but there's also a lot of Russell just laughing and the two talking about obscure aspects of their lives.

brilliance tampered with the special effect disadvantage of the wrong year. still good though by psychodrama311 June 7, 2003 - 11:35 PM PDT

i read somewhere that this was supposed to be a sequel to the adventures of buckaroo banzai. i can totally see that with the cast of pithy characters, bizarre and memorable dialogue, entertaining special effects and fight scenes that were very good for the day. sort of a eastern martial arts mysticism meets a spagehetti western bravado with zany and often absurdly hilarious results. with kurt russell playing the hero. kim cattrall playing the damsel. and john carpenter holding the strings. a very good flick. i mean it's a movie laughing and playing the straight face at the same tyme.
