Synopsis
Taking his cue from such 1970s horror classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), animated rocker Rob Zombie goes celluloid with the throwback shocker House of 1000 Corpses. Running low on gas as they travel the highways of America in search of the ultimate roadside attraction, a group of teens pull into Captain Spaulding's (Sid Haig) museum of oddities (which also offers fried chicken and gasoline) only to become obsessed with uncovering the mystery of a legendary local maniac known only as Dr. Satan. When an attractive and mysterious hitchhiker subsequently offers to give the thrill seekers a personal tour of Dr. Satan's old stabbing grounds, a breakdown forces them to take refuge with a group of menacing oddballs as a fearsome storm rages outside. As the evening progresses and the backwoods hosts' Halloween festivities become ever more threatening, the teens soon realize that the legend of Dr. Satan may hold a bit more contemporary weight than any of them had previously thought. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

What a disappointment! Rob Zombie thinks he knows what we want to see, and Rob... dude...you're wrong. He thinks we want 4 different film/video effects interrupting every horror moment, strobe sequences that leave you nauseated and predictably bad bad guys/girls doing predictably bad bad things. His latest movie, "The Devil's Rejects" shows he still doesn't know what we want. We don't want rank sadism, Rob. Anyone can produce mindless cruelty on film. But the most cruel aspect to H1000Corpses is that you have to sit through it. It's a stupid movie and misses every opportunity to do something original and interesting. Not scary, not really gory and feels like an MTV video that runs 88 minutes. Ouch!

Rob Zombie's directing debut starts out fairly ok and has an entertaining Sid Haig performance (why was he named Captain Spaulding anyway? I didn't know Rob Zombie was a Marx brothers fan), but there's not much else to make it worth recommending. The thing that annoyed me the most was how generally sloppy and amateurish most of this movie was, I thought that several scenes were really poorly edited and I got tired of all the grainy Betty Page clips and other stuff Rob Zombie spliced in for no particular reason like a first-year film student. I think that this movie shows that being a big fan of horror movies doesn't necessarily qualify you to make a good one (take the "One hell of a great horror movie!" endorsement from Tobe Hooper on the box with a big grain of salt).

This movie was on the shelf for a couple of years, I'm not really sure why it was considered too "controversial" to release, it actually felt a lot tamer than any number of other, much superior horror movies I've seen. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a total of about 2 ounces of blood, and I'd say that it's several times more "demonically brilliant" than Rob Zombie's directorial outing.

One positive thing that I'll say about this disc is that the menus are pretty entertaining (there's an extra that's probably the most pointlessly hilarious one I've seen since the 'Do not click here, there is nothing here' page on the Being John Malkovich DVD), I wish I could say the same for the movie.
