BMW's THE HIRE is an innovative Internet film series that combines a unique marketing program with terrific short films made by some of the world's finest directors. Each of the five primary films in the series stars Clive Owen (CROUPIER) as the Driver, who gets involved with famous, mysterious clients seeking different destinations while being tracked and hunted by murderous gangs, suspicious spouses, and fanatical papparazzi. The films, of course, feature dangerous car chases and terrific stunts (that show off the myriad ability of different BMW models) while also telling compelling stories that end with creative plot twists. John Frankenheimer's AMBUSH revolves around a diamond heist double cross; Ang Lee's CHOSEN centers on a young Tibetan child wih mystical qualities; Wong Kar-Wai's THE FOLLOW features the Driver revealing the secrets to following another vehicle without being noticed; Guy Ritchie's STAR focuses on a nasty diva (Madonna) who needs to get to her next show while avoiding the media and her somewhat devoted entourage. Alejandro González Iñárritu's POWDER KEG takes place in a South American battle zone, as a New York Times war photographer can't stop taking pictures while the bullets fly all around him. The series also includes behind-the-scenes footage that demonstrates how certain stunts were done and shows some of the special camera setups that were invented to get the best action shots; each individual movie can also be viewed with director's commentary that discusses how and why each film was made.

Thats what I learned from this disc.
It reminds me of some of the stuff they play before movies in the theater. The interesting part is seeing how far they go to avoid having the BMW lose races or appear like a steaming pile of metal after getting shot up. |

A compilation of 8 short movies ~10 minutes each, The Hire starts off pretty lame (IMO) and gets better. Each directed by a different director but all starring Clive Owen as "The Hire". My favorites are "The Chosen", "The Follow", "The Star", "The Powder Keg". My favorite of those is easily "The Star". Directed by Guy Ritchie and with a surprise guest star (geez... guess who), this one is the only real comedy as The Driver is made to take a superdiva on "the ride of her life". I know, it's a cliched term, but it fits the movie -- literally.
2 movies disappointed me (The Hostage, Beat The Devil) and I feel most who see this will not like every short, but I also feel that most will like at least a few of the shorts.
Yes, most of the movies are basically an extended commercial for BMW (except the last movie, strangely) but they also work. The car chases are great and, of the shorts I enjoyed, the plot was interesting.
If you don't see them all, I highly recommend seeing "The Star". Funny, lots of action, and a different style of acting for Owen. I saw this one a few times before returning the DVD. This short is about an 8 or 9. The other movies range from 5-8. So, all in all, about a 7.

I almost all the short films they have here. As clear as it is, its a promo for BMW. If you dont mind thier advertising, then you will enjoy the short films by various directors. The stories are pretty interestsing. A few of them really stood out and I didn't want them to end. The driver is really talented. The stunts he pulls off are amazing. If you looking to be amazed on what a bmw can do with a professional driver...please check out this dvd! =c) |
