| A lot of critics, not to metion moviegoers, hated this film, but if you liked Avary's "Killing Zoe," give this one a shot. It's a comedy, first of all, though not your typical college frat-house gross-out. THE RULES OF ATTRACTION is much more interesting and subtle, and there's plenty of off-kilter stuff to chuckle over. Van Der Beek makes up for his work in TEXAS RANGERS, as does Sossamon for hers in A KNIGHT'S TALE, and the rest of the cast including oldies Dunaway and Kurtz, is terrific, with Ian Sommerhalder perhaps the stand out. Avary makes inventive and clever use of the camera, including the most interesting split screen since that format's invention. There is wicked fun to be had here, surprise, and even a bit of feeling now and then. I have never wanted to read Ellis' novels, but I must say that, after "American Psycho" and now this one, I am at least a fan of the films based on his work. |
