After having been disbanded, the team is now recalled to active duty. Their hapless new Aide has the hazardous job of rounding up the team and helping them to function in their new environment. Unfortunately, their new headquarters is less than state-of-the-art, and their assignments are less than glamorous. And the girls are starting to get on each other's nerves to boot.

Meanwhile, a new mystery emerges a terrorist organization is stealing the DNA of endangered species across the galaxy. This puts members of the Meltylancer team at risk as well, as several of them are "unique specimens.

Contains episodes 1-3.

Let's see: exaggeratedly stereotyped characters plus incompetent fan service plus a completely incoherent or absent plot? It must be another anime based on a video game! Melty Lancer is something of a train wreck. The characters are pretty well-designed and the action scenes are OK, but every time it looks like it might improve, the story detours into some kind of trivial idiocy. Even the one real "fanservice" scene on the first disk is handled in such an abrupt and meaningless way that it fails. How can you screw up fanservice, of all things? Well, they managed it.

Maybe if I'd played the game I would know what's going on in this ridiculous show. Otherwise, the character designs, backgrounds, and animation are always capable and sometimes much better than average. There are little quality touches all through, of the sort that much better shows lack. This could have been a really good show if someone had tried to give it a story.

Hilariously Titled Anime
I probably shouldn't judge a DVD by its cover.
Anime Studios - GONZO
One of a new breed of anime production studios, GONZO executes the marriage of CG and traditional animation with tremendous energy and flair. Lots of titles, no masterpieces... we'll see when Saishuu heiki Kanojo hits Region 1.
