Synopsis
Fuori Dal Mondo/Not of This World tells a story about people learning to deal with their responsibilities and follow their true path in life. Caterina (Margherita Buy) is a novice nun who is soon to take her vows. One day, while taking a walk in the park, she discovers a newborn baby which has been wrapped in a sweater. While Caterina immediately turns the child over to the proper authorities, she feels compelled to find out more about the baby and its parents. A tag on the sweater leads her to Ernesto (Silvio Orlando), a mean-spirited type who operates a dry cleaning shop. Ernesto eventually admits that he may be the child's father, and, as he and Caterina get to know each other, he begins to open up and realize the importance of accepting his responsibilities. Similarly, Caterina begins to realize her desire to have a child of her own, and her growing attraction to Ernesto, may mean a life in the church may not be right for her. Meanwhile, the child's mother has to deal with her guilt and confusion, her unhappy relationship with her family, and her need to build a new and healthier life for herself. Fuori Dal Mondo/Not of This World marks the fourth collaboration between actress Margherita Buy and director Giuseppe Piccioni. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

When NOT OF THIS WORLD made its U.S. theatrical debut in 2000, it was given the brush-off as a "loamy soap-opera" in a The New York Times review by Elvis Mitchell (a man not much missed, from my perspective) and quickly disappeared from view. This often happens when The NY Times does not appreciate a movie from overseas. Domestic product can defy a bad review, but for foreign films, that's it: Goodbye. What a shame, for this quietly amazing (and award-winning) Italian movie is a must-see.

"Not of This World" encompasses an enormous range of characters--from the nun into whose care comes a newborn baby, to the child's birth mother (and father), policemen, dry cleaning workers, church people, hospital staff and many more. All of these form a wonderful mosaic of life in then-present-day Italy, showing how people manage to survive and prosper through their various work/family communities. The film is superbly acted by everyone--particularly Margherita Buy, as the nun, and Silvio Orlando as the owner of the dry cleaning establishment who is pivotal to all that happens. Without giving too much away, I want to encourage foreign film lovers to see this one.

Piccione's movie is beautiful in every sense of the word and profound regarding the social contract that, however haltingly, binds us citizens together. It does not give in to easy sentimentality or wrap up everything and everyone in a feel-good finish. Yet it will make you feel something strong and deep, and the series of photographs shown at the end will give ample food for thought--once you've wiped away your tears. Don't be put off by the film's title, which makes it seem like an "extraterrestrial" Roger Corman movie. NOT OF THIS WORLD is very much of--and important to--this world, particularly to those western "democracies" who seem to care less and less about the needs of their own people.
