Synopsis
Originally titled G'mar Giviya, the Israeli Cup Final takes place in 1982, at the time of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Soldier Moshe Ivgi is far more concerned with the outcome of the World Cup soccer tournament than he is with the invasion. Captured by the PLO, Ivgi finds a kindred spirit in the form of his sports-nut captor, Muhamad Bacri. The subsequent prisoner-jailer relationship, which endures throughout a perilous journey through war-torn Lebanon, manages to transcend all racial and political barriers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

GreenCine Says: The Israeli anti-war film Cup Final (G'mar Giviya) is a stunner, a powerful and poetic work set in 1982, at the time of the World Cup. An Israeli Army reservist is captured by a retreating eight-man unit of Palestinian soldiers during Israel's invasion of Lebanon. The PLO squad is led by Ziad (Mohammed Bakri, who looks a Lebanese Tom Berenger), while his main captive, Cohen, suffers because he's missing his World Cup vacation for this chaos. Cup Final is directed in spare but efficient fashion by Eran Riklis, who earns props for not taking sides here: humanity is the only side, and soccer brings them together. Tense all the way up to a devastating conclusion. -- Craig Phillips

The goallllllllll of this list is to collect the soccer-themed movies out on DVD, of which there are relatively few and even less that are "great." But many are worthy films for fans of the "beautiful game." UPDATED: JUNE '10 for World Cup.
