Full of surprises, this study of human values never drifts into the shallows. Set in the harsh Mongolian climate, the film explores the question of where decency comes from with its clean, sharp contrast between materialism and greed on the one hand, and human obligation on the other. The tough, nearly brutal setting studies human behavior within the sharp focus of necessity. My wife and I found ourselves riveted by the tight, careful plot, the steadiness of the acting, the rugged beauty of the landscape, the exotic Mongolian culture, and the loveliness of the star. Watching the heroine herd sheep on the back of a two-humped, long-haired Bactrian camel was worth the price of admission all by itself. The riddle of life is never compromised by this film, and the ending only serves to highlight the paradox of love.
