Following the surprising success of his cheapjack Star Wars knockoff, Star Crash, Italian director Luigi Cozzi was given the helm of this cheapjack Alien knockoff. An alien cyclops causes a man to cover the Earth with nasty eggs (sometimes made of silicone, sometimes close-ups of common olives). The eggs release gelatinous gunk which makes people explode, and it's all part of the alien's plan to take over the world. Cozzi, a less-talented protégé of Dario Argento, at least gets a good soundtrack by using his mentor's house band, Goblin, but delivers a bad film nonetheless. The director admits that the ludicrous monster was made of badly painted papier-mache, requiring 96 separate cuts to look convincing in its big scene. It didn't work. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

| This Italian "Alien"/"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" rip-off was perpetuated by the same man responsible for "Starcrash" (a "Star Wars" rip-off). A South American coffee plantation is a front for an alien invasion. Filled with lots of gooshy explosions like popping pimples. Features an exploding rat, the shouted line "Help! There's an egg!" and a monster that -no lie- makes The Crawling Eye look like a CGI masterpiece. The version I saw had 10 mins edited out of it, but I seriously doubt the return of that footage could save this cinematic cow plop |

| To call this an "Alien" rip off is to either give "Contamination" too much credit or insult a much superior effort. With all the earmarks of 80's Italian splatter flicks (exploding torsos, a pseudo new age rock soundtrack, low budget actors/actresses in place of bigger names they couldn't get), "Contamination" will satisfy gore hounds but sci fi buffs are sure to be disappointed. Argento collaborator Cozzi (credited as Lewis Coates) has been trying in vain to live up to his predecessors (Fulci, Argento, even Bava) but seems destined to achieve only B-Grade greatness like an Italian Roger Corman, Charlie Band or Freddy Olen Ray. It's more or less what you probably expect though the accompanying featurette including a Cozzi interview is undoubtedly more interesting than the movie itself. |
