In its moral ambiguity and gritty punch, this film consciously recalls The French Connection, and though the story here isn't as good, what both films share is searingly honest acting, and clean, fresh direction.
Where Narc tops its counterpart, however, is in emotion. The superb acting and writing deliver characters we care deeply about, characters who are deeply harmed by the experience of operating undercover in the world of drug trafficking.
Ray Liotta's performance here is so impressive, you wonder why director Joe Carnahan didn't give him more screen time. Liotta is beefed up and menacing, a Detroit version of Denzel Washington's character in Training Day.
Overall, this is a genre film that transcends its genre, and for that it deserves a good long look. |
