Special make-up effects wizard Bob Keen, the same man responsible for creating the limber lycanthropes in Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers, returns to design the moonlight monsters featured in this tale of five friends who go for a hike in the Scottish highlands, only to find themselves fighting to the death against a hungry werewolf. Teenage mother Kelly Ann (Samantha Shields) was recently forced to give up her baby for adoption, a development that has left her deeply depressed. Realizing that Kelly Ann needs to get her mind off of the maternal loss, randy Father Steve (Peter Capaldi) suggests that the depressed girl and her friends set out on a leisurely trip through the highlands. When Kelly Ann discovers an abandoned baby in a castle crypt, however, the group becomes prey for a vicious Shadow Beast with a particularly hearty appetite. Now, their only hope of living through the night is to slay the beast while they still have the chance. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

...when the moon rises, your audience will snore.
Brevity is in this short Scot film's favor (72 minutes, yes!) but not much else is. The first half is filled with quick cuts and the like, so that we can't/won't see the "creature." Once we do, he looks more like a large, heavily made-up dog (rather rubbery, too) than anything very scary or monster-like. The script ain't much, but the performances are the best possible, considering. Rating it a five, under these circumstances, seems to me pretty generous. Oh, yes -- and the baby thing is WAY too much. But if you need a heavy-duty symbol just crying out for plot twists, I guess it'll have to do. |
