I don't normally bother with bonus disks but I'm so glad I got this one after watching Spirited Away.
The gem on the disk is the Nippon TV Special (with English subtitles). It's a fascinating and amusing documentary about the entire process of creating Spirited Away. If you want a taste of Japanese corporate culture it is strongly recommended.
I couldn't help but notice the many parallels between software developers in dot-com sweat shops trying to rush their product out on time and the Studio Ghibli team. The effort involved is amazing with everyone working until 2am or 3am then back in the next day by 11am yet you can feel how everyone pulls together with tight-knit teamwork.
For those looking at the artistic side, there is more than enough to fill your bellies including running the conceptual storyboards along with the film sound track as another option on the menu and 101 different advertisements/trailers.
I didn't think much of the first option on the menu that covered the American dubbing of the movie (which has English or original Japanese sound tracks plus English subtitles.) However, my views on this point may be biased in light of the fact that I think that the American dubbing for the movie completely changes the story in a very detrimental manner anyway.
One can honestly say that I enjoyed this bonus disc as much as the movie, which I also rated 10. |
