| If a tragedy is a drama that ends in a funeral, while a comedy is one that ends in a wedding, this qualifies as a comedy, but only in Thomas Hardy-world. Unlike his other works, this one doesnt leave you gasping and ready to die; you might actually call it uplifting. As period-piece melodrama and sweeping scenery, it cant be beat, and that come-hither-death Hardy undercurrent saves it from saccherine overload. The ending is perfect. This is an A+ production. |
