Though only Stanley Kubrick's second film, his trademark visual style is on full display here. This film is nothing less than a declaration of a young director's genius.
Particularly unsettling in this film are the parallels, shot-for-shot and character-for-character, with Kubrick's later Vietnam opus, Full Metal Jacket. In this context, Kubrick is showing us how little humanity evolved between 1917 and 1971.
