It's a bit of a dark comedy...

but not as dark as Fargo...it's not violent, it's just that some of the things that are funny wouldn't be funny if they happened to you personally. I really loved the movie, I've even shown it to my Mom (55) and daughter(16). When the movie starts your first thought is "this isn't funny" - but it is! you just have to follow it through. There are many unexpected surprises. This is one of my favorite movies because it's so original.

all the tropes of indie filmmaking

Arquette is hard to believe as a neurotic and suicidal voyeur whose chance meeting with one of his neighbors, a terminally ill sociopath, sets the stage for a string of chiches: acid trips, kind-hearted strippers, rednecks, bowling alleys, stilted soul-searching, profound conversations about pop culture, and scenes seemingly built around mid-90's alt rock. Still, there is something there. This film has moments of truth. Unfortunately they're undermined by the film's insistance on how unhinged and cool it is. San Francisco residents will thrill at the various geographical impossibilities (being able to walk out on the bay bridge, running from Pier 39 to Fort Funston with a live fish).
