Devdas (2002)
Set in the early 1900s, this film follows a young man named Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) on his way home to India after having spent the past ten years in London. As the news reaches Devdas and his ex-love Paro's (Aishwarya Rai) respective households, the family matriarchs remember when the young couple were still children. When Devdas' mother found out the two wanted to get married, she refused to give her consent, and in doing so, set off a sequence of events which would lead Devdas into alcoholism. Though Paro has agreed to an arranged marriage with a wealthy landowner, she still loves Devdas, and is determined to lure him away from his constant drinking. Devdas is based on a classic Indian novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye, and is the third feature directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

The filmstock is literally saturated with hues of red and gold, and the sets are detailed and colorful, if not actually beautiful. Still it's a pleasingly lush if entirely kitsch look, exaggerating what was memorable about Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham's look to a crazed extreme. The actresses and costumes look good, and the music is pretty good if not amazing.
That said, the plot just sucked. As depicted in this movie, Devdas is a totally uninteresting and unlikable character. If there's anything interesting about him, it's the cultural experience of seeing an unexplicated foreign archetype (it's a famous story, and this is the third famous "Devdas" movie). Shah Rukh Khan does the same over-acting he always does, and here it really grates. The female characters are pathetic doormats. |

| From start to finish, this movie offers visual splendor and enveloping melodrama. While the actual character of Devdas is (in my view) the weakest and most tedious part of the film, Aish and Madhuri are enchanting and give the performances of their careers. The songs and dances are moving, lush and almost unbearably glamorous, and the relationships between the female characters are interesting and offer a view of Indian women more varried than in your run-of-the-mill Bollywood film. The sets, costumes and cinematography are on an entirely different level than 99% of the Bollywood films out there and the period-setting makes it feel more epic than any other modern Bollywood blockbuster. |
