This movie had great reviews and word-of-mouth (see http://www.planetbollywood.com/Film/Mohabbatein/index.html) However I just didn't understand the appeal. Even for Bollywood movies, the basic plot was too silly - a prestigious college where students aren't allowed to fall in love, or they get immediately expelled. Naturally, the male leads meet local girls to fall in love with. In addition, a music teacher teaches them to express their feelings.
I think the premise right there killed it for me. It's impossible to care about characters, when their primary conflict is so silly and unbelievable. Not to mention - nothing to their characters stepped outside the standard Bollywood cliches. Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are of course two of the most charismatic actors in the business, but what can you do with such roles? Their overdriven charisma, applied to such dreck, comes off as silliness, or even satire. |
