Synopsis
This installment of Biography takes a look at hip-hop pioneer, business mogul, and philanthropist Russell Simmons. The program follows Simmons from his humble beginnings growing up in Queens, New York, through his early days as a groundbreaking force in the rap scene, producing and managing such acts as Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Jay Z, and Tupac Shakur, eventually creating the now legendary Def Jam Records with partner Ric Rubin. The biography also deals with Simmons' marriage to model and creator of the Baby Phat fashion line Kimora Lee Simmons, as well as his ongoing work to reform mandatory sentencing laws in New York, and with such organizations as the Rush Philanthropic organization, PETA, and the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
