This video collection consists of four half-hour episodes from the Japanese animated TV series Gigantor. Originally televised in 1963 as Tetsujin 28GO, the series was based on a popular comic strip by Mitsuteru Yokoyama. The title translates to "Iron Man No. 28", which is also the name of a robot created during WW II as a weapon of war. After Japan's defeat, a pair of kindly scientists retooled the robot into a creature of peace, dedicated to the destruction of evil-doers everywhere. For American audiences, distributor Fred Ladd changed the names of the principal characters: Iron Man No. 28 was now Gigantor, his scientist mentor Dr. Kaneda became Dr. Sparks, and Kaneda's precocious, saucer-eyed son Shotaro was rechristened Jimmy. Though initially released in black-and-white, Gigantor has recently been computer colorized for cable-TV exposure. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
