Sexual frustration is the focus of this Hitchcockian thriller from French director Claude Chabrol. Schoolteacher Hélène (Stéphane Audran) comes to a small Périgord village to begin a new job. She is soon romanced by the local butcher, Popaul (Jean Yanne), but is distracted by her job and memories of a previous ill-fated relationship. A series of brutal murders of young women and a dropped cigarette-lighter raise Hélène's suspicions about her suitor, whose pitiable, depraved compulsions lead to a gruesome conclusion. Audran, who was Chabrol's wife at the time, makes an engaging heroine, and Yanne is simultaneously scary and pathetic as the obsessive butcher. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

| The wife and me couldn't make head nor tail of this movie. The schoolteacher doesn't want no love or kissing. But she seems to like the butcher well enough. She even gives him a present. If you ask me, the two of them do not have anything in common. She's a refined type that likes kids and dancing and sitting like a buddha. He was in the army for fifteen years that doesn?t know anything but chopping meat. Now when the school teacher finds the cigarette lighter next to the body, it bothered her some. But she doesn't do nothing! I never have been a lawyer, but I would say that makes her an accessory to a crime. I guess she likes the butcher so much she's willing to go to jail. When she finds the cigarette lighter missing, that's a different story. Then she locks every door in the house she can think of. The wife says I should not spoil the end for you. Well, her smiling like that sure spoiled it for me. |
