a great first film.

if this doesn't get you shouting to characters on the screen, nothing will. you can rely on everyone to do exactly what they shouldn't... making it deliciously entertaining. don't expect the same laugh-out-loud quirky humor of the coens' later films, but you'll find the masterful use of regional color injected into every Coen project.

Creepy and lots of blood

Seeing this movie doesn't make you feel positive about humanity. I have to say that I couldn't get engrossed in this film, like I did with "O Brother Where Art Thou?" or "Fargo", because the film noir style in general is too dark for me. However, the Coen brothers' touch is definitely here in their first film -- it's an excellent exploration of motives and personalities where the environment is just as much a character as all the actors. Good acting, good plot...
