Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) stars as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super-villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry. His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). The only thing standing in his way is Captain Hammer, Billy's superhero arch-nemesis played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly). With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer...

Not being one who hangs onto Joss' coattails, I had to be coaxed into watching this. I thought the BUFFY series was fine even when things got a little strained (I mean, I did willingly watch the entire run eventually), but by no means am I a worshiper.
So color me surprised when I found DR. HORRIBLE to be thoroughly entertaining, musical conceit and all. Wonderfully acted, and nicely self-referential rather than cloyingly arch. I dug it, dug it, dug it.
Maybe the fact that it's so short helps. In fact, I'd resist the urge to make a sequel or expand it to a proper series; its shoot-in-my-backyard aesthetic adds enormous charm.
Definitely worth a look; might even be quite repeatable.
7 1/2 stars, if possible. |

Joss Whedon is one of those guys who can't seem to do anything very wrong. His oeuvre goes from good to better to best. Dr. Horrible... is a little throw-away number, created, if I recall correctly, during the writer's strike to prove that you can make something good without spending a ton of money. He, and his cast and crew, have done it. I just wish it were longer. At the point at which it seems to be taking off (around 40 minutes in) it's suddenly over. Oh, well. Whedon has definitely adhered to the old vaudeville saw, "Leave 'em wanting more."
The music and lyrics are particularly delightful; I could have listened to them all night, especially with Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day doing the singing. There ARE some extras to fill in the missing time. I watched only the first, a "making of," which was enjoyable enough. But I want more of the thing itself -- and Dr. Horrible, Captain Hammer and Penny. |
