In this French tragicomedy, once Pierre sees Auriele, he cannot rest until he finds her. Pierre is just minding his own business, when this woman walks by. He does not know who she is, where she lives, what she does or anything. Pierre, a music critic and TV commentator, uses his resources to try to find her. His life is pretty meaningless otherwise; even now he contemplates suicide. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Is THE WOMAN IN BLUE fluffy froth from one of France's most interesting and long-lived filmmakers (Michel Deville)? Or is it a deeper-than-you-think philosophical treatise on life, love, dreams, death and the very bad behavior--amoral, whiny and self-obsessed--of the human male. I'd vote for both. It's also a look at one of cinema's most revered and prolific actors, the marvelous Michel Piccoli in middle age, here appearing at his most relaxed, effervescent (for him, anyway), and just a tad annoying. Bonus: the lovely Lea Massari (remember "L'Avventura"?) and Michel Aumont.
If this movie is not up there with Deville's best that I've seen ("Le Mouton Enrage" and "Toutes Peines Confondues"), it's nowhere near the worst (the pretentious-times-ten "Le Paltoquet"). Among its varied delights: a wonderful way to scam your bartender, and the use of "fin" as a dark visual joke that's precise, ironic and unique.
With each film I see from this director, I am more convinced that it's time for a critical reassessment. If "Le Paltoquet" ever appears on DVD, I will probably watch it again, as my love of Deville's work has grown immeasurably in the five years since I first encountered that film (and had not, at the time, paid sufficient attention to its director). Perhaps I missed something. Or many things. |
