Rokuro Mochizuki's A Yakuza In Love tells the tale of a brutal gangster who discovers a softer side when he falls for a demure waitress. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
The Masterworks of Rokuro Mochizuki: Another Lonely Hitman (Disc 2 of 4) (1995)
This noirish Japanese yakuza (gangster) drama, follows the exploits of a laconic hit man Tachibana, who loses face during the killing of rival gang leader when he accidentally wounds the gang- leader's daughter. Because of this he serves 10 years and upon his release is returned to a dramatically changed Japan. Now most of the yakuza activities involve drug dealing, pornography, and real estate. It all totally offends his old-fashioned code of honor and he makes this known to his fellow gang mates who placate him by giving him money and his own personal hooker. Yuki is good at what she does, but when Tachibana learns that she is hooked on drugs, as he once was, he tries to get her to rehabilitate.
The Masterworks of Rokuro Mochizuki: Mobsters' Confessions (Disc 3 of 4) (1997)
Takashi Miike contemporary Rokuro Mochizuki directs this take of a small-time con artist who incurs the wrath of a powerful yakuza boss. Jiro (Shunsuke Matsuoka) is just the kind of man that law abiding citizens fear most. An unrepentant parasite who makes a living by tricking small businesses out of large amounts of money, Jiro soon finds a partner in crime in the form of sexually abused teen Kumiko. When yakuza boss Kamewada (Shohei Hino) learns of Jiro's lucrative scam, his unwelcome attempts to get in on the action lead to tragedy for all involved.
The Masterworks of Rokuro Mochizuki: Onibi (Disc 4 of 4) (1997)
Veteran actor Yoshio Harada stars as world-weary gangster Noriyasu Kunihiro in this shaded character study by way of a two-fisted yakuza drama. The film opens with Kunihiro getting out of stir and praying at the grave of his former boss. He is fed up with the mobster life and aware that another stint in jail will end with a trip to the hangman; thus, he wants to go straight. He asks his former underling (Sho Aikawa) for a job and lands one as a driver for a sauve yakuza don (Eiji Okuda). Well aware of Kunihiro's blood-soaked past as a hit man, the godfather is only making sure he hasn't lost his touch. Kunihiro gets an opportunity to prove his innate skills when he is asked to lean on a couple of debtors who are unwilling to pay. The result is violence but effective. Pleased with Kunihiro's work, the don rewards him with the company of an attractive hostess-bar piano player named Asako (Reiko Kataoka) and surprisingly they hit it off. Later, Kunihiro is dropped from the gang because of his previous violent encounter with the debtors -- bad for business, they explain. For a while, Kunihiro is a happy man with his beautiful girlfriend and his legitimate job as a printer. That is, until the gangster world beckons him again. This film was directed by former pinku eiga director Rokuro Mochizuki.
