In the distant future, human kind has been forced underground where people live in isolated villages that never make contact with the surface world - or even with each other. Frequent earthquakes force the villages to tunnel deeper and deeper, and the individuals tasked with making this happen are called diggers. One digger, the 14-year-old orphan Simon dreams of breaking out of the confines of his narrow village life and seeing the surface.
