Shaw Brothers Collection (Disc 1 of 4): The Heroic Ones (1970)
Chang Cheh takes the director's chair for this martial arts adventure produced by the Shaw Brothers and set during the final years of the Tang Dynasty. The Chinese Emperor has requested that barbarian chieftain Li Ke-yung (Ku Feng) recapture the capitol city, which has recently fallen under the rule of a powerful rebel leader. In order to accomplish this formidable task, Ke-yung calls on his thirteen sons, each of whom are powerful fighters. Li Shih-szu (Ti Lung) and Li Tsun-hsiao (David Keung) in particular are more than up to the task, and may be cunning enough to successfully plan and execute this dangerous mission. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Shaw Brothers Collection (Disc 2 of 4): Battle Wizard (1977)
Pao Hsueh-li spins this wild, eye-poppingly bizarre kung-fu period epic adapted from Jin Yong's 2,000-page tome Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. Two decades after getting his legs whacked off by Prince Tuan Ching-tun -- who used a rare Yang Chi technique that fires bolts of lightening from one's fingertips -- the nefarious Wong Po-yen seeks vengeance on the Prince's son, Tuan Yi (Danny Lee), an earnest young scholar with no discernible martial arts skills. One day while strolling in the country, Tuan Yi happens upon Cheung Ling-ar, an unusual lass who can wield snakes into weapons that can explode heads. When Wong's men catch up to them, Ling-ar tells Tuan Yi to find the legendary swordswoman and Yang Chi master Mou Wan-ching (Tin Lei) who has the habit of killing every man she meets. Because Tuan Yi told her of impending danger, Wan-ching spares his life. He returns the favor when she gets a near-lethal dose of poison from a demon. When he drinks the blood of a giant killer snake, Tuan Yi is suddenly in possession of fantastic kung-fu abilities. Later, Tuan Yi and Wan-ching's wedding is thwarted when Wong -- who is now ambulatory thanks to a pair of metal stilts -- captures the couple with plans to serve them up to his giant man-eating, kung-fu fighting monkey.
Shaw Brothers Collection (Disc 3 of 4): The Duel Of The Century (1981)
Chu Yuan, co-star of Jackie Chan's Police Story, takes the helm for this martial arts epic following a pair of investigators as they team up to uncover the reason why two famous swordsman have agreed to engage in a duel. Liu Yung and Sun Chien star.
Shaw Brothers Collection (Disc 4 of 4): Two Champions of Shaolin (1980)
Master kung-fu director Chang Cheh delivers this straight-ahead period martial arts saga. Tung Chien-chen (Lo Mang) was accepting into the hallowed Shaolin Temple even though he is Manchu, because his parents were both killed by the same. Shaolin has been locked in a fierce rivalry with the Wu Tang clan, which is allied with the Manchu born Ching emperor. When Tung is wounded in a skirmish with a group of Wu Tang's men, he is given safe haven from a master of knife throwing named Chin Tai-lei (Sun Chien) and his sister, Pei. Tung soon learns the finer points of their art and eventually, along with fellow kung-fu master Hu Wei-chen (Chiang Sheng), strikes revenge against the Wu Tang. Later, Tung proposes to Pei, but during the reception, the Wu Tang attack, kidnapping Tung and killing Pei and her brother. Will Tung get out of this ugly situation and find justice?

Late director Chang Cheh's kung-fu movies are filled with fast and tough actions, putting people constantly on the edge. Arch-enemies Shaolin clan and Wu Tang clan are divided over their support of the Manchu empire. With disciples like Tung Chien-chen congregating in town, an all out battle between the two clans are inevitable. When you see Wu Tang clan raided during Tung's wedding banquet and left a trail of blood behind, you know this is no sissy flick. Look for a lot of take no prisoner, mutual annihilation fight.
I'll give it 10 points for style and action but 5 points overall. I think I like feminine movies more.
