This film is worth watching for anyone interested in a caricature of Mexican politics. It's based on the Mexican satirical comic books "Los Supermachos or Los Agachados." (The original artist had some kind of disagreement with his publishers and started a new magazine.) Alfonso Arau, the director, plays the principal character. He looks and acts just like the comic book character, un indio campesino whose only clothing is an old electric blanket (symbolic of how modern technology is affecting Mexico's poor.)The movie is divided into two acts and an epilogue. Pancho Córdoba is great as don Perpetuo, the local cacique who is in charge of the R.I.P. party in a small town. The epilogue is all slapstick and it seems to be a weak attempt to get laughs from those people who were not sophisticated enough to understand the political satire in the rest of the movie.
I saw it without the subtitiles, but I checked out some of the English subtitles later, they are easy to read.
