Where was this movie in the 2009 Oscars? It was head and shoulders above any of the winners, but was completely snubbed. A first full-length feature by David Bowie's talented 38-year-old son, it exploits the best advantage of science fiction -- the freedom to explore alternative realities -- without confining itself to the ordinary territory of space-opera, slasher-film-in-orbit, or pretentious meditations on Life, the Universe, and Everything. Instead, we get a fully realized character who's placed in tough situations and keeps making surprising but completely convincing choices. Every choice makes him a new person. The script is so well crafted that the artificial character of GERTY is more convincing than 99% of human characters in most commercial films and nearly all science-fiction films. The story reminds me of excellent work written by John Varley.
