In a post-apocalyptic America where the once-picturesque countryside has become a desolate and violent wasteland, one man (Denzel Washington) fights to protect that sacred tome that could hold the key to the survival of the human race in this futuristic thriller from filmmaking duo Albert and Allen Hughes (From Hell and Dead Presidents). Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, and Ray Stevenson co-star in the Warner Bros. production. ~ Jason Buchanan, AMG

| It was entertaining. Gary Oldman loves to play the weirdo in movies like this and go over the top, but he restrained himself a little bit here. Ray Stevenson was his usual solidly convincing self in an underwritten part. The plot was sort of "Mad Max" meets "Fahrenheit 451" with a dash of "Escape from New York" and some generic "Stranger Comes to Dusty Western Town" action. Denzel Washingtons character was interesting enough to keep my eyes on him to the end. I can't resist movies about the cultural threads that might survive a holocaust and permit society to rebuild, so even though this story didn't have a great deal new to say on that subject, it was enough to give me pleasure for an evening. |
