| Some movies are just plain interesting--for their story, their locations, their ideas--without being films you rave about or insist that your friends all rent. RESPIRO falls nicely into this category. The locations are unusually beautiful, the story (mom borders on manic; family members and townspeople try to cope) is genuinely interesting without being particularly riveting. The performances are fine, and the direction quiet and firm. Foreign film lovers are a pretty sure bet to enjoy this; those who have trouble with subtitles will probably want to pass. While some critics and viewers have proclaimed the mom a "free spirit," you may come away rooting for the MDs to try a little medication. Free spirits, for instance, do not let loose all the stray dogs in the village, leading to their consequent extermination. The line that separates romantic and ready-for-lock-up is perhaps a bit more explicit than the one pictured here. |
