| This is not an easy movie. There is much historical context underlying the dramatic thread of the film, and it is long, almost 3.5 hours. But if you're prepared to take the chance, you will not regret it. The movie has an episodic structure with each episode representing a phase in the life of the monk Andrei Rublev. There are scenes of surreal beauty: a pagan ritual in the forest, an unbelievably intricate bell casting, a crucifixion... and many more. If you want an authentic look at medieval Russia, this is it. |
