It is 2046 when a mysterious alien force begins their annihilation of the human race. Leaving behind the one person she loves, Mikako joins the interstellar battle as a pilot. As Mikako flies further into space, her only connection with Noboru are text messages sent from her mobile phone. And so - while Mikako risks her life to save mankind - Noboru waits. At first days, then months, then years for each new message that will let him know whether Mikako is still alive. And, while she barely grows older in the timelessness of space, Noboru ages. The two lovers, worlds apart, desperately strive to remain connected as the gap between them widens at a frightening pace. A spectacular blend of traditional and lush 3D animation, Voices of a Distant Star is a technical marvel and a contemporary masterpiece of storytelling.

For a 24 minute piece with no room for character development, done on a home computer, and ignoring that there has to be another human up there with her somewhere, its awesome. It does not hold up as competition for alot of the other titles it has been compared to in other reviews though. Its nice to have characters that get developed (Why did they put that cellphone-maniac girl in a mech and send her off to save humanity? Other animes usually answer this!).
I really hate when reviewers flock around something shouting "10! Best thing since sliced bread *and* toasters put together!" With reviews like that, if it ends up being a nine, people will be disappointed. |

| Intensely beautiful, with an emotional density and gravity that will floor all but the hardest and blackest of hearts... I cried the first time I saw "Voices of a Distant Star." Beautiful... but sad, yet entirely brilliant. A MUST SEE film made all the more impressive as, Makoto Shinkai, deftly animated/created this lush film on his G4 Mac single-handed. |
