A huge hit when released in India in 1994, director Sooraj Barjatiya's affecting family drama started a notable trend towards more family friendly fare in a time when violence was the predominant attraction of Bollywood films. As Prem's (Salman Khan) brother prepares for his marriage to Nisha's (Madhuri Dixit) sister, the single siblings slowly fall in love with one another. Following the death of Nisha's sister Pooja, Nisha is obligated to marry Prem's brother Rajesh since Rajesh's child is familiar with Nisha. I've put off seeing this movie because of friend's descriptions, but after "Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon" by the same director, I thought I would check it out.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie that you will only like if you already like Bollywood movies. There is no conflict or plot until the last 20 minutes - but by the time it comes, the fun inanity of the movie is so well established, that having something actually happen feels like a betrayal of the movie' ethos. It would hardly be stretching to say this movie depicts an alternate reality where everyone is happy, people live fulfilling lives in accordance to tradition, and there's no ugliness. Maybe heaven is something like this?
The basic story involves lots of people being in love with each other, and singing and dancing about it, and getting arranged marriages. There's an extended wedding sequence where they do nothing but sing, dance, and flirt, for about an hour. Oh yeah, also there's a dog who does tricks, judges cricket, and occasionally becomes an avatar of the Lord Krishna. And a car with phrases such as "my family is the best" and "I am witty and clever" written on it. And a game of musical chairs, where the entire game is captured on film.
Salman Khan does a good job, hope he survives prison! The older cast does a good job, which is natural considering they're used in every other Bollywood movie you'll see. The rest of the cast is merely so-so, and the songs worked with the film but weren't so great on their own. |

| Favorites from the Indian film industry - you gotta love the random dances, the bad guys with mustachios, and the hyper-driven melodrama! Green Cine's Bollywood selection is limited, but all these picture are worth watching. |
