A delightful combination of swashbuckling historical action-adventure, witty comedy, sexy romance (1950's style). Granger is very much in the best Errol Flynn mode, athletic, slightly tongue in cheek, first rate in delivering witty dialog. Eleanor Parker is the very definition of a spit fire; the interplay between her and Granger is wonderful. Other major pluses: one of the best sword fighting scenes in all of movie history, Janet Leigh looking oh so lovely, gorgeous saturated Technicolor cinematography, some very spirited and fun comedia del arte, a energetic and beautiful musical score.
Maybe Green Cine will someday have a Criterion version of this; I viewed a laser disk version that had very interesting commentary by Granger, the director, and a film historian. |
