Synopsis
Rainer Werner Fassbinder not only directed Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Angst essen Seele auf), but also scripted the film, designed the sets, and produced. Brigitte Mira heads the cast as a lonely German cleaning woman, who enters into an affair with equally lonely--and much, much younger--Moroccan mechanic El Hedi Ben Salem. They marry, despite the shocked, bigoted reactions of those around them. This thinly disguised remake of Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows (cult favorite Sirk was one of Fassbinder's personal heroes) won the international critic's prize at the Cannes Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Painfully obvious and didactic, dated, self-conscious, and just stupid, this movie is to racism what "Reefer Madness" is to Marijuana smoking. I literally can not believe the postive reviews and ratings given this movie.

The usual classy criterion transfer of an almost unbearably beautiful movie. If you're not a fassbinder fan you should be. In this film he puts true love under the strain of petty societal mores and the results ain't pretty. I can't praise this movie enough. If you saw far from heaven and loved it, then you'll be in nirvana here. If you saw far from heaven and didn't get what all the fuss was about, see this one because it doesn't drown it's emotional gut-punch in film-geek fetish or preach to you. Ali just breaks your heart. Highly recommended
