Black and White in Color may have won the academy award for best foreign film, but perhaps it was a slow year. I found this to be a slight film, with little to say that hasn't been said elsewhere and better on the subject of race relations, national fervor, etc. Halfway into the film I noticed I had no particular interestin any of the characters, and I'm sorry to say didn't develop any by the end of the film. Are we supposed to feel something for the young geographer who takes over the military operation such as it is and makes a black native his queen? I'm afraid it all didn't add up to very much for me. So white colonialist's are buffoons, and war is stupid as the French and German toast each other at the end. Perhaps it would have been worthwhile if delivered with a little bit a comedic flair other than broad obvious strokes, but I didn't laugh once during the film.
