s-CRY-ed is an action adventure with an excellent rockin' score and surprisingly engaging characters despite a premise that's been redone many a time -- youth who are born with psychic energies are persecuted and feared by normals, and certain such youth band together to police their own... c'mon, can you say X-Men or Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure or even Harry Potter?
But I was thoroughly entranced by s-CRY-ed. I like the main character, Kazuma, who is a cocky hero with a sly grin and a generosity towards the less fortunate. I like the variety of personalities in the HOLY team. I like that HOLY crosses the line between good and evil, so this world is definitely not in black and white. I like the subtle touches in relationships and characters, and I like the hints of politics and societal influences that thankfully don't get too heavy-handed.
But most of all, the action is fun and varied. From the opening scene where Kazuma plummets into a building after jumping onto the wing of a plane, to the fights between psychic talents where various manifestations of power are displayed, there is plenty of confrontation, running, dodging, driving, taunting, and power blasting. Also, it's not bloody and there is no fan service (gratuitous flesh), so this is a great series for people who simply want a good story, good characters and good, clean, escapist action.
If you get a chance, watch the extras on this disk. Besides having a biography for each of the main characters and their power manifestations, there is a brief history of the s-CRY-ed world that contains more info about how these power users came into being. And for the s-CRY-ed obsessed, the opening title scene is slightly different for each episode so don't get all trigger happy with the Skip-to-Next button on your remote. :-) |
