The characters on Mystery Science Theater 3000 make a mockery of B-movies by ad-libbing their own dialogue and commentary, thus creating comedic masterpieces from what would otherwise have been wasted film. Shorts Two is a collection of shorter films -- often originally intended to be informational -- which have previously been included as precedents to full-length features on other episodes. | This one is worth it, at least for Mysties (MST3K fans), solely for offering up what surely must be Cambot's finest sight gag. I won't spoil it here except to say it relates to sports and cable. The rest of the film is a middling MST effort - they do their best but the film, a weird amalgam of biker movie, sports flick, and B-movie crime drama (and not successful in any of those arenas) doesn't give them a whole lot to work with. There are definitely some chuckles, though, and the Satellite of Love crew comes up with a few choice linking skits that make this one still enjoyable viewing for completists. And then there's that one cambot gag which at least made this sports fan double over in laughter. |

Another hilarious sampling of the old short films the Satellite of Love gang was forced to watch before main features. This collection is only imperfect because as usual Rhino skimped on an MST DVD, with no extras and, like on the VHS version, only includes 6 of these shorts. But never mind, it's still easily worth a rental because the shorts that are here feature spot-on commentary by Mike and Joel and the 'bots, and are a twisted look at the scary state of US educational films in the 1950's. The shorts are as follows:
-Catching Trouble: Worth the rental right here, this disturbing short "nature" film about a man who hunts wildlife to throw in a crappy zoo would get PETA up in arms, but the commentary is perfect
-What To Do on a Date: If you yearn for the easy dating days of the 50s, you may change your mind after seeing just how insipid everyone was, at least according to this film. Weenie roasts and taffy pulls for everyone!
-Last Clear Chance: A safety film from our friends at the railroad, funny in a rural sort of way. Remember, don't let this happen to you. Don't die.
-A Day at the Fair: Yup. Uh huh. Just what it says. Lots of hogs and cows and ferris wheels and thank god the MST gang was along for the ride or you'd want to kill someone
-Keeping Clean and Neat: With Catching Trouble, probably my favorite of the shorts here. I never knew grooming children was so time consuming! Funny, and creepy in a way
-Days of Our Years: A reverend preaches against negligent behavior, or something. I'm still trying to figure what this one was about. Probably the weakest of the shorts but still worth watching.
All in all a swell collection of hilarious and disturbing little pieces of Americana. Think about it won't you? Thank you. |
