A man eager to learn Spanish gets an education he wasn't expecting in this comedy drama. Xavier (Romain Duris) is a French economics student who is nearing the completion of his degree and is looking for work. Xavier's father arranges for him to meet a ranking member of the Ministry of Finance, who makes him an offer -- he can give him a good job, but only under the condition that he learn to speak Spanish. Determined not to pass up the opportunity, Xavier enrolls in a language program in Barcelona, despite the misgivings of his girlfriend, Martine (Audrey Tautou). Upon his arrival, Xavier moves into a large house shared by a large group of students from all over Europe. Xavier finds that his ideas and attitudes are challenged in a positive way by the diverse personalities of his housemates, and that his loyalty to Martine is tested by his attraction to Anne-Sophie (Judith Godrèche), a sweet but lonesome woman from France who has been away from her husband for too long. After a visit, most of Xavier's roommates decide they don't much care for Martine and Xavier gets advice on seducing Anne-Sophie from an unexpected source -- Isabelle (Cécile de France), a footloose lesbian living in the house. In October I will be moving to Europe,to live & this film could not have come my way at a better time. The film follows a twenty something French man to Barcelona where he spends a year trying to learn the language. What he ends up learning is that people, no matter where they are from or what languages they speak are all looking for the same thing connections.
This film deals with stereotypes quite well and no one is safe. From the Stupid American to the Orderly German all assumptions are met and dealt with. The characters that inhabit this tiny apartment (a microcosm if I ever saw one!) really learn about themselves from learning about other cultures. We can all learn something about that.
This is a joyful film full of laughs and poignant moments if you care to see them. Its about chasing your dream no matter where it takes you.

| Melting pot of warm, personable characters. Coming of age story covered nicely in a syrupy layer of nostalgia, with just the right mix of comedic moments and separation anxiety. |

This film might have uncovered a new theme. Most coming of age movies take place with adolescents at home. This one is about the self discovery of a twenty something when he leaves home. The plot is light (to say the most) and really just exposes the relations among a diverse group of people.
The subtext is about stereotypes in an approach sure to mislead you for a while.
The film should probably get an award for the most mistitles: Spanish Inn, Spanish apartment, Euro-pudding, PotLuck. Although auberge is an old fashioned word for "inn", the real meaning of "auberge espagnole" is a place where you find only what you have already brought. Kind of like a hostel (auberge de jeunesse is a youth hostel).
Judging from the polarity of critics reactions, the title may suggest that you get out of this film what you bring to it. I hope you enjoy it! |
